ITANAGAR, Jul 12: The main accused in the Dikrong murder case, Issak Ali attempted suicide inside Naharlagun Police Station lockup on Thursday morning at around 6:20 am, informed Superintendent of Police, Capital Complex Tumme Amo.
The SP informed that the accused tried to burn himself using clothes and mattress issued to inmates. Fortunately the Guard Commander and sentry on duty pulled him out from the fire on time. He sustained minor burns on his head, shoulder and hand.
The fire was immediately doused off before spreading further. Later, the accused was admitted to TRIHMS for medical verification, stated the SP while informing that he has directed the OC/IO to request the court to send him to jail.
“The accused said that he pulled out thread from the mattress to bind all the clothes and mattress together before setting it on fire with a lighter. However the matter is under inquiry by SDPO, Nahalagun to find out how the accused got hold of a lighter," added SP.
SP further disclosed that, according to the accused, he found the lighter under the mattress and attempted to commit suicide fearing that he would get capital punishment for the crime he had committed.
“There is a possibility that the lighter was left behind by some protective custody (PC) inmates during Anti-PRC riot issue as so many were brought in during that time and the police had no proper time to check everyone,” informed Amo.
