NEW DELHI, Feb 23: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Sunday evening conducted an interactive meeting with a delegation of local land owners from Upper Siang, Shi Yomi, Anjaw, Lohit, Kamle and Siang districts in presence of senior officers of the Department of Hydro Power Development here at Arunachal Bhawan in the national capital.
This is the second group of delegation of land owners which had reached Delhi on February 23 for a 8-day exposure tour to the successful dam sites of the country to have a fair understanding of how the economic environment of any project-affected area is uplifted once a hydro power project is completed in its vicinity. DCM advised the delegation to take inputs from the Himachal Pradesh success story, which despite being a hilly state like Arunachal had already harnessed more than 50 % of their hydropower potential. While lamenting that the state had so far managed to reach only 1% of the capacity, he advised the touring land owners to interact with the people from these areas to get first-hand information on how the project(s) has positively influenced their lives and created business opportunities.
He also appreciated the efforts of the Department of Hydro Power Development in giving opportunity to the land owners from various parts of the state to have this kind of on-ground experience. The group is scheduled to visit Chamera1, Chamera 2 & Chamera 3 Hydro Power projects developed in cascades in Himachal Pradesh. Before leaving to the project sites, an awareness programme is scheduled in Central Board of Irrigation & Power, New Delhi on February 24 where experts from the fields of environment, technology, water conservation and socio-economics will share their experiences.
A video film titled ‘Bhakra Nagal & Tehri Dam’ will also be shown to the delegates to give them an elaborate understanding of the land sharing issue. DCM Media Cell
