ITANAGAR, Aug 29: In-line with the Fit India initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Director of Sports took the initiative to mark and celebrate National Sports Day, the birth anniversary of legendary Hockey wizard Maj. Dhyan Chand by organizing a mass rally from Secretariat Gate to State Sports Complex, Chimpu with the students of Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy. This was arranged to stress the need to stay fit and healthy. Many sports lovers attended the rally, which was flagged off by Sports Minister Mama Natung, in presence of celebrity guests Padma Shri Dr. Arunima Sinha, the first Indian amputee to climb the Mt. Everest and P. Renedy Singh, former National Football Team Captain of India.
In the evening, Director of Sports honoured eminent sports personalities and gave away cash incentive to achievers and medal winners in several sports discipline. The highlight of the function was motivational speech by Dr. Arunima Sinha and Renedy Singh.
Chief Guest Mama Natung, also released the key policy highlights of the department. The Minister in his address committed to ensure inclusion of incentives to the coaches at government level. He ended his deliberation with an appeal to citizens of the state to contemplate the Fit India movement launched by the Prime Minister in every corner of the state and launch a similar movement "Hum Fit Toh Arunachal Fit". Rajiv Gandhi University today celebrated the National Sports Day 2019 along with the rest of the nation with great enthusiasm.
Celebrations began with a ‘Walk for Fit India’ and the RGU fraternity came together to complete 10,000 steps for a fit India. Jawans from NDRF also joined the walkathon led by VC Professor Saket Kushwaha, Registrar, Professor Tomo Riba, Commandant, Umesh Kemar Thapaliyal and Senior Faculty members. The event witnessed massive participation from the teaching, non-teaching and student community with inspiring songs presented by the band of students of RGU’s Department of Fine Arts and Music. The walk was followed by sports and recreational activities. Inter-hostel fitness contest, employees fitness contest and other games organized by the Department of Physical Education which saw participation of more than 700 students.
Later a programme was organized to witness the live telecast of the historic moment of the launch of Fit India Movement which was followed by prize distribution ceremony for the competitions held on the occasion. Amidst applauses, VC announced that fitness contest will be made an annual event with cash prizes in all 4 categories and committed to contribute the prize money for the next 5 years from his personal savings.
