KHONSA, Oct 14: A 50 -year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by Assam Rifles jawans on October 13 last at Lazu, Tirap District.
The deceased has been identified as Minliam Namet from Sinnu village under Lazu circle of Tirap district.
Speaking to media, Superintendent of Police,Tirap, Kardak Riba informed that a report was received from villagers that a local person was beaten to death by the Assam Rifles jawans on the evening of October 13 last near Tinlom area of Lazu circle.
‘Reportedly the deceased took lift from a local police while on his way from Khonsa to Lazu . Meanwhile, Assam Rifle Jawans stopped them and assaulted them even the Police personnel arguing with them that they hit their vehicle near Tinlom area.
We are investigating whole incident and registered a case under section 302, as such there is no any proper evidence to prove that what actually happened with the deceased. We have constituted a Peace committee comprising of Village Chief, Deputy Commissioner and Brigadier of Assam Rifles to contain any law and order,' informed the SP.
He also informed that a murder case has been registered in the Lazu Police station. ‘Moreover, postmortem can only reveal the cause of death and if found guilty accused have to surrender before the police,' asserted the SP.
