RONO HILLS, May 19: The Tirap Changlang Namsai & Longding Students' Union of Rajiv Gandhi University (TCNLSU-RGU) while expressing its anguish over the army atrocities at Pumao village in Longding district on May 16 last that led to the death of a 60-year old man and bullet injuries to six others, has demanded an immediate central intervention.
The union through a press release issued on Tuesday has termed the incident “barbaric, very unfortunate and a big blunt to the name of the otherwise magnanimous Indian Army and yet another instance of misuse of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958.” Vehemently denouncing the “fabricated version” of the incident floated by the Indian Army to cover up the shameful deed, the union while calling it an “act of genocide” stated that government must take full cognizance of its development. It has demanded appropriate judicial inquiry at the earliest possible time and stern punishment for all those involved.
The union while contending that for decades the innocent people of TCL region have been the victims caught in the crossfire between the insurgency groups and Indian Army, has urged the central government besides the state to intervene immediately for finding out long-lasting and peaceful solutions.
