BOMDILA, Jun 11: In an effort to reach out to the people explaining the basics of income tax rules & regulations, the Income Tax department conducted its first ever ‘Outreach Programme cum Interaction’ today here at district headquarters.
Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Guwahati-1, Shishir Kr. Jha, IRS gave an overview of Income Tax laws in the country since 1860 till date and the various challenges associated with it. Commenting on the screened video clippings, CIT remarked that tribal communities should not take the exemption for granted and it is for them to ensure that non-locals those who run business or are into contract works in the name of the locals, file regular returns with the department. “If we don’t protect the tax exemption we have, we may soon be paying taxes”, he added.
Additional Commissioner of Income Tax from Range-Tezpur, Doly Loyi, IRS, shared various endeavours made by the department to reach out to the people to make the return filings easy and user friendly. Citing various reasons as to why one needs to file IT returns, he observed that tribals should know the legalities and reasons behind the exemption granted and play their part in ascertaining that return filings are made regularly by their non-local partners as Benami Act is equally applicable to them.
West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Sonal Swaroop opined that though there has been IT exemption in Northeast, there are certain issues which the taxpayers are not well acquainted with and outreach programmes and interactive sessions like these can go a long way in making people aware of the importance of filing returns.
Various DDOs, administrative officers, traders and businessmen took part in the interactive session. DIPRO
