ITANAGAR, Feb 5:
The state government launched a new injectable contraceptive under Antara Programe and Centchroman (chhaya) today to expand people's choice of contraceptives. Gynecologists of various districts of the state were also trained on the new contraceptive during a programme at the state training center, National health Mission today.
Addressing the participants, Director family welfare Dr. K Lego, underscored the importance of family planning and emphasised on fertility regulation for reducing birth rate and reducing the maternal death rate in the state.
He urged the Gynecologists to take up the responsibility to advocate the usage of contraceptive by providing people the choice of basket of contraceptives to avoid unnecessary abortion, teenage pregnancy and spacing. India was first country in the world to launch family planning programme as early as in 1952 with the aim of controlling its population, he said.The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched two new contraceptives in September last year.
Gynecologist TRIHMS Dr Goter Doke informing about the new contraceptive said that a broader basket of choice, an injectable contraceptive DPMA Antara have now been introduced into public health system, and the supply of contraceptive will be sent to all the districts .
He further clarified that the injectable contraceptive Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (Antara) is the fourth most prevalent and widely used as an effective, safe and acceptable method of contraceptive across the world.
