Hyderabad, Apr 27 : Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has condemned the attacks on two media persons, including a woman journalist in Nalbari and Tinsukia districts of Assam on April 26.
According to reports, Rajen Deka, a correspondent with Assamese daily Dainik Asom, was allegedly assaulted with sharp weapons on Thursday night by a BJP activist at Tegheriattari village of Nalbari. He is currently undergoing treatment at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
IJU affiliate, Journalists’ Union of Assam (JUA) has also strongly condemned the heinous attacks on journalists. It had however welcome the condemnation of the attacks by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and urged upon the government to speed up investigations and give exemplary punishment to the culprits.
IJU has also condemned assault on Tinsukia-based television journalist Upasana Barua Goswami employed with News18 Assam-Northeast by a group of four miscreants in a restaurant.
In a statement IJU President and member of Press Council of India Amar Devulapally and Secretary General Sabina Inderjit has asked the Assam government to ensure safety of lives of journalists in the state. IJU Press Release
