ITANAGAR, Jul 8: The Capital Police on Wednesday arrested an imposter who claimed himself as the PA of Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso from Lekhi, Nirjuli.
Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Additional SP Sumit Kr Jha, SDPO Naharlagun Kamdam Sikom, OC PS Naharlagun Inspector K.Yangfo and SI R.K Jha under the close supervision of SP Capital Tumme Amo arrested the habitual offender and a case numbering 82/20 u/s 420 IPC has been registered.
“Today at 1100 hrs an FIR was registered based on the complaint from one Manoj Baruah, Branch Manager, Axis Bank, Naharlagun informing that he received a phone call from a person claiming to be the PA of Techi Kaso, MLA 13th Itanagar AC with the request to transfer Rs. 50,000 to A/C no. 093501516061 belonging to one Ajit Kanu, stating that one of the daughters of the MLA was stuck on the way while travelling from Bangalore to Itanagar due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The caller also informed that he could not complete the transaction due to the ongoing lockdown in the Capital Complex and will surely come to the bank to return the money.
As per the request, Rs. 50,000 was transferred to the above account. But later after contacting the MLA it emerged that no such instruction was given by him to his PA or any other person, SP informed. He also revealed that previously the accused had used the same modus operandi to cheat Rs. 80,000 from Prasanta Neogi, Branch Manager ICICI Bank, Naharlagun in March 2020. It further transpired that the accused used to call several branch managers in Capital Complex like HDFC Bank, Itanagar and Naharlagun Branches, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank Itanagar branch and had attempted to cheat in the same manner.
As a part of the trap to apprehend the culprit, his number was put under surveillance and the CDR was obtained. While analysing the CDR and bank statements, it was revealed that the accused had cheated several innocent local girls by impersonating himself as a Junior Engineer. Meanwhile, the investigating team convinced one of his girlfriends to call him at Itanagar to nab him and finally on June 28 his location was found at Lekhi, Nirjuli.
On further enquiry, it was revealed that the accused entered Arunachal Pradesh, stayed at the SQF Centre Lekhi and introduced himself as a government employee with a pseudonym Anurag Kanu, whereas his actual name is Ajit Kanu.
The police team was waiting for his Covid-19 test report and after it came negative, he was discharged from the SQC on Wednesday and immediately arrested.
