ITANAGAR, May 14: Officials of the state’s Department of Geology & Mining today conducted an annual interactive meeting with their counterparts from the Geological Survey of India (GSl) under Ministry of Mines, Government of India to review the latter’s mineral exploration activities in the state.
The meeting which discussed about the geological survey and drilling activities undertaken by GSI in different parts of Arunachal Pradesh with exchange of information and data was attended by Deputy Director General (GSl), Itanagar T.L Shitiri and chaired by Secretary, Geology and Mining Bidol Tayeng, IAS. From the GSI’s status report on presence of mineral deposits in different parts of the state, it was revealed that about 35% of total deposits of graphite in the country is found in Arunachal Pradesh and the state could be the leading producer of graphite in future. This could be a great relief to the national exchequer as the country now imports this mineral from other countries to meet its domestic demand.
Secretary, Geology and Mining emphasized that GSI’s survey and drilling activities must be concentrated towards the Indo-China international border considering the fact that China has already undertaking huge mining activities across the border in Tibet. Development of road towards the international border is also expected to facilitate exploration of minerals in the international border.
GSI was requested to share information, data & technical knowhow and provide hand-holding in exploration of minerals with the state’s Department of Geology & Mining.The two departments agreed to promote Geo-Tourism in the state particularly in places rich with lime deposits.DIPR
