ITANAGAR, Jun 27: Governor Brig. (Dr.) BD Mishra (Retd.) on Saturday during a meeting here at Raj Bhavan with PHED Minister Wangki Lowang reviewed the current status of the state’s public health engineering, water supply and sanitation aspects.
Discussing the issues relating to water conservation, rainwater harvesting, potable water supply, sanitation, reuse of treated grey water etc., Governor emphasised on conservation of every drop of water. He urged the Chief Engineers and officers of the Public Health Engineering department to explore more ways to motivate the state’s people to practice rainwater harvesting and increase the number of catchment areas. While stressing on people’s participation in water conservation through innovative methods, he cited the efforts of Egam Basar who was instrumental in rejuvenation of water sources in the forest areas of Basar. Besides exhorting the engineers to explore more ways to mitigate water scarcity during the dry season, the Governor also suggested composite application of solar and electric power methods to reduce energy charges.
With the intention of making Raj Bhavan an example of optimum water usage unit, Governor advised the officers to carry out water budgeting of the entire premises and suggested setting up of grey water management system, reuse of treated grey water for local horticulture and kitchen gardens. He opined that feasible systems should also be installed in big buildings like State Secretariat, Mini Secretariats, housing blocks such as MLA apartments etc. and impressed upon the Chief Engineers to ensure supply of potable water to the state’s people, especially in semi-urban areas which have high prevalence of waterborne diseases. 
Sharing his observation, the PHED Minister called for concerted efforts by all departments and building of water conservation culture among citizens. Earlier, the Chief Engineers briefed the Governor about coverage of villages and towns under various schemes and the damages caused to water supply pipelines due to landslides.
