Naharlagun, Feb 11: In a significant move to protect and promote the indigenous culture and faith of the state, the Department of Indigenous Affairs has sanctioned a fund of 1.75 crores for the construction of a new prayer center, Nyedar Namlo. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of indigenous communities.
The new executive committee of Donyi Polo Khumko Nyedar Namlo in Naharlagun took their oaths in a ceremony that also marked the transition of leadership for the session 2024-27. Nyedar Namlo serves as a sacred place for the local tribes to worship and pay homage to Donyi Polo, representing the sun and moon in their faith.
Er Taba Tedir, the Minister of Indigenous Affairs, has released 87 lakhs in the first phase of funding for the construction of the Nyedar Namlo building, indicating strong government support for indigenous faiths.
The event was attended by notable figures including Dr. Nabam Tata, Advisor, and Prof. Hui Tag, Vice Chairman of Reyang Yerkum Pwglang, along with the outgoing and incoming committee members who participated in the handing over of responsibilities.
Participants and guests emphasized the importance of Nyedar Namlo in preserving indigenous faith and culture. Tania Doni assumed the role of Chairman, with Honipa Sono Yangfo as Vice Chairman, among other appointments to the committee.
Speakers at the event, including Honipa Sono Yangfo and Prof. Hui Tag, highlighted the Nyedar Namlo's role in maintaining the community's ancestral beliefs, culture, and traditions. Dr. Nabam Tata raised concerns about the threat of cultural extinction due to Westernization and stressed the importance of passing on indigenous languages and traditions to future generations.
This development is a step forward in the state's efforts to sustain and celebrate its indigenous identity, ensuring that the cultural and spiritual legacy of its tribes continues to thrive.
