Pasighat, Sep 23: The first lady army officer of Arunachal Pradesh, Major Ponung Doming earned laurels for the state today by getting promoted to the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel.
Born to Olom Doming and Jimmi Dai Doming of Pasighat, Major Doming pursued her studies from Government Daying Ering Higher Secondary School and IGJ Government Higher Secondary School, both in Pasighat and was also the topper among tribal students in Class XII. She did her Civil Engineering from Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra and was commissioned into the Indian Army as a Lieutenant in 2008 and subsequently after four and half years later was promoted to the rank of Major. She also served the country in overseas assignment as a part of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force mission in April 2014 at the Democratic Republic of Congo and is currently posted at Pune.
Although Doming never dreamt of serving the Indian Army during her school days, it was only during the college days of 2001-05 while pursuing Civil Engineering that her interest grew. After completion of engineering course and before joining army, she got placement in one of the leading MNC, L&T, Kolkata where she worked for around 2 years. And eventually after appearing at the Services Selection Board Exam, Allahabad in 2008 she made it into the Indian army and joined Officers Training Academy, Chennai
Down to earth by nature, Major Doming is an inspiration for many today and when asked if she has any advice for the younger generation especially girls who are intending to make way into the army she said “My advice to the young aspirants of Arunachal and the region is, dream big and above all have the courage to achieve that.” On being flooded with online queries by suggestion-seekers, she said, “I will consider myself blessed if I am able to inspire even a single person to do whatever little that can be done for our country.”
