ITANAGAR, Feb 22: Hundreds of volunteers consisting of senior citizens, intellectuals, students, members of environment groups including Home Minister Bamang Felix took part in the Senki River cleaning drive today.
Armed with gloves, masks and sticks, the volunteers carrying locally made bamboo trash, collectors scoured the banks of Senki River near Vivek Vihar including riverbeds during the day-long drive.  The drive was organized by Brahmaputra Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti Department of Water Resources, in collaboration with Capital Complex District Administration and the ‘Youths For Clean River AP’. Capital DC Komkar Dulom, SP Tumme Amo, Abotani Clan Organization Chairman  Taba Taku, BO President Gamoh Kamki  and others participated.
Leading the drive, Felix lamenting over  the heavily polluted river bank in the stretch near Vivek Vihar, said that people have mistaken water bodies as garbage dumping areas and requested all living nearby not to throw garbage into the river.
 "It is very important for people to come forward and save the rivers that give us life," Felix said, adding that despite several initiatives by the government including environmental groups and activists, pollution levels in rivers show no signs of decline.He also said that it is not the exclusive responsibility of the government, but a collective dedication and effort of society is needed for  conservation of rivers.
“The rivers get choked up as a result of the uncontrolled dumping of solid waste and during monsoons, it floods up. I appeal people to protect the rivers to prevent an environmental catastrophe which would impact us and marine life of the rivers in long run,” Felix pointed. He also urged all to spread awareness on the importance of  protection of rivers.
