KHONSA, Jul 5: An extortion racket claiming to be an NSCN outfit that was running since many days here in the market area has been busted after prolonged efforts by the Tirap police and Assam Rifles.
Making calls from different numbers and constant change of sim cards and locations was the modus operandi of the extortionists. After careful observation of the methodology followed in the crime, the investigating team found that it was from Dimapur the extortion calls were coming. Working on this aspect, Tirap Police and 6th Assam Rifles joined hands and formed a special team and started raiding the suspected places along with interrogation of all suspected persons. 
Finally, on July 3 last, acting on specific intelligence inputs, the team raided the house of the suspects and managed to arrest Avilash Dutta and Ravi Chetry. 85 detonators and 150 cm detonator wire were also recovered from the duo.
The suspects were brought to the Khonsa PS and a case under Explosives Act was registered against the owner of the house and others. While searching the house the team recovered the mobile phone used for making threat calls to the businessmen for extortion. After sustained interrogation and raids at various places in Khonsa/Changlang and gathering of various technical, electronic and human evidences, Avilash confessed the crime and was arrested immediately. He led the police to the hideout where the sim cards and ammunition were kept and also revealed that Ravi Chetry was his accomplice in the crime.

Ravi also confessed to his crime and divulged that he was operating under the pseudonym Ravi Wangnow with Avilash as his subordinate. Cases of extortion, Arms Act and Unlawful Act were registered against them and further investigation is on. Avilash’s father Tapan Dutta who works as a contingency driver in the RWD Department Longding was also arrested in connection to the case under Explosives Act.
Tirap SP Kardak Riba has congratulated his team especially OC Khonsa PS Inspector W.Kamhua, Assam Rifles SI O. Rongrang (IO)  and the technical team of PHQ who worked tirelessly to solve the case. He further appealed to the people especially the businessmen to come forward and lodge complaints with the police and inform the Assam Rifles on receipt of extortion calls. DIPRO
