AALO, Sep 11: In response to Govt of India’s directive to give special remission to prisoners to befit three occasions, birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd October 2, 2018, and 2019 and Dandi March on April 6, the District Level Committee on Special Remission to Prisoners met under the chairmanship of West Siang District Deputy Commissioner, Sode Potom today.
Chairing the meet, the DC highlighted the instructions given by the Govt of India for special remission and release of women convicts of 55 years of age and above, transgender convicts of 55 years of age and above, male convicts of 60 years and above, physically challenged/disabled, terminally ill convicts, all who have completed 50 per cent of their actual sentence period and convicted prisoners who have completed two- third(66% ) of their actual sentence period as a part of humanitarian values for which Gandhiji stood.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Hirendra Kashyap highlighted all custodial detentions and placed before the committee the list of UTPs at Judicial Custody and disclosed that not a single prisoner falls within the purview of six categories of prisoners as enshrined in the guideline set by the Govt. of India. He disclosed that some cases are to be heard, some do not fall under the category and some convicted prisoners have not completed 50% of their actual period of sentence.
