Bomdila, Sep 21: A District Level NCORD meeting was held today under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, West Kameng, Dr. Dilip Kumar.
Welcoming the participants, NCORD Nodal Officer S. Wangmu Mosabi highlighted the objectives of the meeting and briefed members on the initiatives undertaken so far under NCORD to curb drug abuse and substance addiction in the district.
Officer-in-Charge (Crime), Gagam Aje, through a PowerPoint presentation, highlighted various measures taken by the district police to control the drug menace and presented data related to NDPS Act cases registered in West Kameng district.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner stated that the government is seriously concerned about the rising number of NDPS related cases in the region, particularly the increasing incidence of cannabis cultivation in the Kalaktang area.
Appealing to the public and villagers to refrain from cultivating cannabis, he warned that strict action would be taken under the NDPS Act against those found involved in cannabis cultivation.
The Deputy Commissioner also directed the ADC Kalaktang and AC Balemu to convene coordination meetings with villagers, PRI leaders, GBs, senior citizens, and other stakeholders to identify both the forward and backward linkages associated with cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
He further instructed the concerned authorities to identify landowners who are permitting the cultivation of cannabis on their land. He also cautioned that GBs who fail to cooperate in the drive against illegal cultivation would face appropriate action as per the prescribed rules.
Dr. Kumar urged the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) to organise a cannabis destruction programme in West Kameng district and assured full cooperation from the district administration.
Expressing concern over the possible involvement of external elements in the illegal cannabis trade, the Deputy Commissioner expressed his concerned that if its is not addressed seriously, it could pose a significant threat to the region, the state, and the whole nation. He therefore appealed to all stakeholders to work collectively towards eliminating the menace.
During the review meeting Superintendent of Police, West Kameng, Dr. Dorjee Wangdi Thongon and representatives from various stakeholder departments and agencies, including SIB, SSB, Police, Health Department, NCB, and others also shared their observations and feedback.
The meeting concluded with the observance of the 6th year of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, reaffirming the district administration’s commitment to building a drug-free society.
