DAPORIJO, Dec 2: With a view to harnessing solar energy in one of the remotest districts of India, Upper Subansiri, the district administration has taken several initiatives to make most of the public offices and places, energy efficient with solar energy.
Deputy Commissioner Danish Ashraf is spearheading this initiative to ensure proper lighting at night time in various offices of public importance.
In case of power failure or line breakdown the whole of Upper Subansiri plunges into darkness and most of the crucial public offices (e.g. hospital, health centers, police station, circuit house, etc.) go without lighting.
Initially, under BADP (Border Area Development Programme) around 30 solar street lights were installed at border village of Gelemo covering main public places (school, health centre, etc.).
Soon solar lights will be installed at the last border block of Taksin where electricity is yet to reach.
Further, under CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) fund of ONGC, 115 Solar Street Lights   were installed at various important locations of Daporijo town including District Hospital, Police Station, Government College, Government Higher Secondary  School, Circuit House, Deputy Commissioner’s office complex, Singik Hall area, District Library and in various out-posts  like ADC headquarters Khoduka, SDO headquarters Nacho and Taliha.
This CSR scheme sponsored by the ONGC was possible due to the recommendation of  Kiren Rijiju, MP (West Arunachal Constituency) and Union Minister of State (Home Affairs) and the initiative of the district administration.  Most of the solar lights procured under this initiative are of 24W, therefore have proper brightness and spread of light.
The District Library is also being made solar light enabled for night hours. A reading room is being constructed at the Library with solar lights installed in it to ensure proper and continuous lighting, especially for students preparing during exam time. Installation of these solar lights in the district headquarters has made Daporijo town one of the first Model Solar District in the state. Further District Administration is also planning to cover whole of General Hospital, Daporijo and several Government Schools under this initiative.
