ITANAGAR, Oct 25: Itanagar Commercial Building Owners Welfare Association (ICBOWA) today downed the shutters of all commercial buildings in protest against the ongoing eviction drive being carried out by the capital administration to clear the deck for four-lane National Highway from Chandranagar to Papu Nallah.
Speaking to this reporter, Secretary ICBOWA, Kabak Tapak informed that if the government fails to redress their demands within short time similar protest will be held in next two days. “We are not against development but we are demanding adequate compensation for the demolished buildings as well as building which are not under Right of Way to be spared,’ he added.
Meanwhile, President, Itanagar Market Welfare Association, Yumlam Achung in a press statement also supported the ICBOWA’s stand.
IMWA has urged the state government to temporarily suspend the ongoing eviction drive and initiate talks with the affected commercial building owners regarding their grievances.
They are not against development, said Achung while adding that the government must pay compensation to the land owners following the norms of the Right to Fair Compensation. ‘There is no proper policy for rehabilitation, there are some owners who invested their life savings, some took loans from banks for the buildings. How will they repay their loans if their property is demolished in the name of Highway?, he added.
