SEPPA, Jan 12:  Hundreds of youths, students, members of NGOs, government officials and the public today joined the “Clean Macha River”, an initiative of the  East Kameng students of Rajiv Gandhi University here at Macha river, Seppa in  East Kameng.
During the cleanliness drive, volunteers collected and cleared tonnes of debris likes plastic bottles, plastic materials, wrappers and medical waste from the river as well as from its banks. “Besides the cleanliness drive, we have also organized awareness amongst the people living in both banks about the importance of a clean river and clean surroundings. We also elaborated them about the effects of open defecation and pollution in rivers,” said Tunka Cheri. a student from RGU.  He further expressed gratitude to the members of East Kameng Social Welfare and Cultural Organization (EKSWCO), All East Kameng District Students’ Union (AEKDSU) and locals of the area for supporting the event. “We are happy that all have turned-up voluntarily for the noble cause and we also appeal all the denizens of Seppa and whole East Kameng to keep the river clean,” added Cheri.
Meanwhile, Chairman- Youth Mission for Clean River Arunachal Pradesh, Advocate SD Loda expressed his concern over the dumping of Medical Waste in Macha.  “This is a clear violation of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 and also order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on July 2019 where the Tribunal has directed all states and UTs to monitor bio-medical waste management or pay fine of Rs 1 crore per month till the non- compliance continues in their territories,” Loda stated.
Chairman-YMCR also threatened to register a case against the concerned authority for not complying with the NGT order. There are many number of the hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies  or clinics in various districts which do not have biomedical waste management plants, claimed the Chairman.
