NAMSAI, May 3:A seven member inter-ministerial team headed by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home affairs, Government of India, V Shashank Shekhar, visited flood affected Namsai district on Wednesday to assess the loss and damages caused bythe devastating flood in Lekang Circle in the year 2016.

Senior state officials, Secretary Disaster Management, J Angu, Director Disaster Management, YW Ringu, CE, WRD, Er. L Angu, accompanied the team. 

Deputy Commissioner, Namsai, RK Sharma briefed the team about the enormous loss of private and public property due to devastation by flood in July 2016. Sharma further informed the team regarding rescue and relief operation , remedial measures taken during and post flood period  and rehabilitation of distressed people undertaken  by the District Administration.  

On 22nd July 2016, the main course of river Noa-Dihing was diverted at New Silatoo and around 70 percent of inhabitation of Lekang Circle was inundated by flood waters and vast cultivated land was silted besides washing away of several dwelling houses, damages to roads, bridges, culverts and death of livestock on large scale.

The visiting team witnessed the ongoing work progress at New Silatoo breach point in Lekang circle, met the affected people of Lekang circle and heard the pain of the distressed people, most of them were farmers and marginal workers and had lost their immovable property. Team members also interacted with fish farmers.  The detail of the flood was projected to the team through powerpoint presented by DPO, Dr. K Sarmah.

All HoDs, PRI members, public leaders ,GB’s and representative of various NGOs accompanied the visiting team.
