PASIGHAT, Oct 23: The East Siang unit of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh attempted to carry out a peace rally on Monday to submit a memorandum to Minister, Agriculture through Dy. Commissioner, Pasighat for redressal of farmers’ grievances, but were stopped by police at Pasighat main market citing prohibition of the same rally from the district administration. However, permission was granted earlier for the rally.
The farmers from East Siang districts being led by BKS East Siang president, Katan Yomso, State BKS president, Takali Tamuk and general secretary, Ngurang Tadap showed their displeasure over the action and approach of district administration. Katan Yomso said that the permission for the rally was granted earlier, but the same was again cancelled for reasons best known to the administration.
However, Addl. Dy. Commissioner (HQ), Tatdo Borang came and met the BKS team at the main market square and received the memorandum. Borang on his part, assured to forward the grievances of the farmers after examining the problems of the farmers within two weeks. When asked the reason for cancellation of the permission granted earlier for the rally, Borang couldn’t answer properly, but said that, a committee is being formed to assess the demands of the farmers after which reports will be submitted to the government.
Expressing their grievances to the media, the BKS leaders said that state’s farmers have been ill treated and their genuine demands are being overlooked. They said that there are several Central as well as state government agricultural schemes which have not been implemented till date. They have also appealed to the state government to exempt the KCC loans of progressive farmers, grant KCC loans to only genuine farmers, immediate halt to firm supply system of agricultural equipment, sale of agricultural product with minimum support price and grant of 100% Central/state agricultural damage relief etc.
Despite the assurance given by the state government to give financial assistance to the farmers during last year, the Chief Minister's Krishi Rinn Yojana loan hasn’t been initiated till date though the applications are lying unattended in the bank offices and the farmers are looking for the day of its materialization, the BKS leaders said.
