ITANAGAR, Feb 1: In a historic development, Arunachal Pradesh is set to participate in the final round of the National Championship, Santosh Trophy 2023-24 after a hiatus of 83 years. This was announced by Kipa Ajay, the Treasurer of the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) and Secretary of the Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA).
Speaking at a press conference held at the press club, Kipa Ajay expressed immense pride in the fact that not only will Arunachal Pradesh host the final rounds of the prestigious championship, but the state team will also be competing. The opening match, scheduled between Arunachal Pradesh and Goa, is a momentous occasion for the state.
The Santosh Trophy, initiated in 1941, is one of the oldest football trophies in India. Despite its long history, Arunachal Pradesh had never hosted this esteemed national football championship. The trophy's arrival in the state marks a significant milestone after 83 years.
Kipa Ajay extended gratitude to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, AIFF President Kalyan Choubey, and the executive members of AIFF for providing the opportunity to host the 77th edition of Santosh Trophy 2023-24 in Itanagar. The matches are scheduled to take place at the Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupai, from February 21 to March 9, 2024.
Highlighting the significance of the inaugural match between Arunachal Pradesh and Goa under floodlights, Kipa Ajay expressed the team's determination to compete for the coveted trophy.
In terms of logistics, Ajay assured that proper accommodation had been arranged in Itanagar, Naharlagun, and Nirjuli for the players. Practice grounds at Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy in Itanagar, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Naharlagun, and NERIST Stadium have also been organized. The APFA, in collaboration with the state government, has focused on security, improved facilities, and various other aspects to ensure a successful hosting of the event.
To enhance the spectator experience, online ticket booking facilities have been set up, allowing fans to pre-book tickets to witness the thrilling final rounds of the Santosh Trophy championship, he added.
