ITANAGAR, Feb 26: Arunachal U-21 Football team defeated a very strong rival Manipur with an unprecedented margin of 6-0 in the ongoing Dr. T. Ao Memorial NEC Gold Cup at Guwahati, Assam.
After playing draw against Nagaland, team was against Manipur in a must win match. Arunachal started the match brilliantly when RD Karma opened the scoring inside five minutes of first half. It was all round football by Arunachal throughout the match. R.D Karma scored first hat trick of the tournament and supported well by the goals of Taw Akash, Vivek Gurung and Karli Ngomdir to win the match with huge margin. Dado Sham was declared Man of the Match.
“Our young lads have shown great character and professionalism against the bigger team and result is more than satisfying,” said Tapi Apa, Head Coach of the team.
Unfortunately, despite the impressive result team could not qualify for the Semi Finals. Campaign ended up with a loss, a draw and a win which was not enough for the qualification.
“It’s unfortunate that our boys could not reach semis. But we are going home with lots of positives and learning experience which will definitely help them to improve in near future.” said Gibbs Taba, the team manager.
To pay homage to the recent minor rape victims, the team sported black arm bands during their matches in the tournament.
