PASIGHAT, Feb 5: As a part of the Arun Pig Development Scheme (APDS) in Siang district, Pangin-Boleng MLA Ojing Tasing distributed piglets to 10 beneficiaries at Boleng on Tuesday.
ADC T. Jonnom, District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Officer, Dr. Karik Mize, HoDs and a host of prominent public leaders were present on the occasion.
“The pigs were distributed from the Pig Breeding Farm based at Jomlo from where piglets and other inputs shall be provided to the 475 beneficiaries including five pig entrepreneurs of the district in a phase-wise manner,” said Dr. Mize.
Speaking on the occasion, Tasing suggested the beneficiaries to rear the animals as per technical guidance of the veterinary department and elaborated the commercial prospects of rearing pig with huge employment generating prospects and opined that the scheme will immensely benefit the farmers.
It is worth mentioning that the APD Scheme is aimed to promote availability of high grade crossbred piglets through pig breeding and multiplication units to encourage meat production among farmers under the National Mission for Protein Supplements (NMPS) being implemented by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, GoI. Under NMPS, 16 states were initially identified including Arunachal Pradesh during financial year 2012-13 where the pig component had an allocation of Rs. 40 crore. Under it, there will be establishment/strengthening of 16 Pig Breeding Nucleus Units in the selected states with proven potential and coming up of nucleus centre with 0-18 Satellite Field Breeding Units with each centre to produce 5,000 breeding piglets per year for distribution to the satellite units and other farmers for breeding purposes.
