Itanagar, May, 29: A two-day Refresher Course cum Online Training Programme for the Legal Aid Counsels (LACs) of various districts of the state was organised by Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) on May 28 and 29.
The programme was arranged keeping in view the rising number of cases of violence against women and children during the current lockdown period. On the first day, topics on women and child protection laws were discussed and Resource Person Advocate Marie Riba, also the Project Consultant for APSLSA trained the LACs who work closely with One-Stop Centres, Women Helpline and prison authorities, touching the topics of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Advocate Jungam Jini highlighted the current statistics of domestic violence in the country and lawyers’ roles as guardians in protecting the rights.
On the concluding day, APSLSA collaborated with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) to train the LACs on Access to Justice and role of advocates as per NALSA’s regulations and schemes.  The virtual training was organized from APSLSA office in capital, while Member Secretary APSLSA Jaweplu Chai inaugurated the online training from Lohit district. Sr. Research and Advocacy Officer for Police Reforms Programme at CHRI Raja Bagga spoke on the need for early access to legal aid for persons in custody and trained the lawyers on NALSA’s Early Access Framework and highlighted the importance of documentation. Sr. Programme Officer for Prison Reforms Programmes at CHRI Amrita Paul threw light on NALSA (Legal Services Clinics) Regulations 2011 & SOPs.
Online pre and post questionnaire sessions were also conducted. LACs from Papum Pare, Kra Daadi, East Siang, East Kameng, Lohit, Lower Dibang Valley, Anjaw, Lower Subansiri and Lepa Rada districts participated in the training. APSLSA PR
