NERIST Impasse

ES Reporter

ITANAGAR, Mar 7:  Following the appointment of a new Director, North East Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), the Students Union of NERIST has announced to suspend the ongoing agitation however asserted that it has not been called off just yet.

SUN has further expressed resentment over appointment of a new Director from the campus itself.

‘From day one of our agitation, we have demanded for a new director from outside the state. Moreover, we don’t have any enmity with any faculty members of NERIST but with a bitter experience in the past, we demanded a fresh director,’ informed President, SUN, Banta Natung here at Press club today adding that most of the students are upset over the outcome.

He further questioned the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Minister of State Kiren Rijiju for not appointing a Director from outside the campus and termed the appointment akin to ‘putting a lollipop in our mouth to stop the agitation.’

‘The issue of NERIST is in public domain and everybody knows what politics is going on inside the campus even MoS Kiren Rijiju himself admitted about the politics inside the campus. So we urge him to eradicate the same politics from the campus and save NERIST from further blunder,’ Natung said.

Natung while hinting at something fishy further claimed ‘As per Rijiju’s statement the file process and the name of one Professor BV Ramana Reddy was in the list for appointment but some people lodged complaint against the appointment as a result delaying the process. We urge MoS Rijiju to come out clean on his statement and disclose the name of that person who lodged complaint on appointment of Director from outside the campus.’

Rijiju clears the air on NERIST issue

Meanwhile responding to student's dilemma over the appointment of Director,  MoS Kiren Rijiju through his official FB account  cleared the air and said " “Appointments Committee of the Cabinet is the highest appointment body where other Ministers have no scope of any role at all. We are not privy to any documents or details. The Search-cum-Selection Committee is an official body with highly reputed members to look after the cases of hundreds of Institutions”.

"The decision of appointment was taken following request of NERIST fraternity that I had genuinely followed up with HRD ministry", he clarified.

Appealing the students to concentrate in their studies, he said, there may be differences within the faculty members but students should not get entangled into it as it may adversely affect their studies.

My best wishes to the students for their academic excellence, the social media post further read.
