ITANAGAR, Dec 17: A day before the Supreme Court will hear petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, on Wednesday, a group of likeminded students and residents of the capital complex began a peaceful sit-in protest at Tennis court awaiting for the verdict to be in people's favour.
Speaking to media, one Ramdhu Bagang said that they have decided to sit in a peaceful dharna till Wednesday morning. He also added that the group will carry out a peaceful protest march from Tennis court to Raj Bhawan on Wednesday and later submit a memorandum to the governor.
The sit-in  is also a show of support  to the indefinite dharna of RGU student Misso Nobin against the CAA. We don’t know what the Supreme Court’s verdict will be, but we want to make our voice loud and clear that the people of our state strongly oppose the Act, he added.
Another   participant said the sit-in dharna is in support of the agitation going on in all the Northeastern states against CAA.  When asked about the assurance given by the central government to Arunachal Pradesh under BEFR-1873, he said ‘Though BEFR will be applicable for Non-APST what about Chakma-Hajong refugees, the government should come clear on their status. Before implementing BEFR-1873 or CAA they should be deported from Arunachal Pradesh.'
They also expressed solidarity with the students of different colleges and university who have suffered brutality of the police force during the CAA protest. Many petitions are filed against the CAA, including one by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Tripura's royal scion. The CAA is facing resistance from the entire northeastern states as they fear a demographic, linguistic and cultural invasion.
