ITANAGAR, Oct 23: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) today endorsed the stand taken by its Siang valley based three federal units, i.e,  All Upper Siang District Students’ Union, All Siang District Students’ Union, All East Siang District Students’ Union regarding the unpredictable and unusual behavior of Siang River since last one and a half year.
The demand for “Water Treaty” between  India and  China by the affected aggrieved student unions of three Siang districts that has proposed to stage a peaceful protest rally cum sit-in at Pasighat on Wednesday is most legitimate and is only the way forward, a press release issued by the AAPSU here today said.
It is disheartening to note that despite havocs and inundation caused by flash floods of Siang River whereby several villages that have been established since ages got  uprooted and riverine eco-system affected,  the Government of India still remain nonchalant and indifferent to the woes of its people. The much touted inter-ministerial team requested by Chief Minister Pema Khandu  which was expected to visit the flood affected areas is yet to see the light of the day as well, the AAPSU said.
The recent drying up and then unprecedented water surge the very next day in Siang River that brought down along with it several floating barrels bearing Chinese alphabet insignia of isocyanate (C6 H9 O2 N2) which is an explosive mainly used in heavy construction site have clearly vindicated the AAPSU’s stand that something amiss is going on across the border which the Union Government has time and again played down at the pretext of natural calamities. It is time that the Government of India asserts and reaches out for “Water Treaty” rather than remaining in denial mode lest one or the other day all the rivers  emerging from Tibet region which is under Chinese occupation will face the same fate that of River Siang, the statement concluded.
