ITANAGAR, Apr 8:In a massive fire incident over 40 houses were reduced to ashes in Gunanagar, Chongkham under Namsai district on Saturday last, rendering scores of people homeless.
No casualties have been reported but properties worth lakhs has been lost in the inferno.
‘The losses could have been averted if fire tender reached on time but due to absence of Fire Tender in Chongkam , fire brigade team has to come from Tezu and Namsai which is almost 35 KM & 30 Km from Chongkham,’ lamented a denizen.
Fire incident is not new in Chongkham but despite repeated pleas for a Fire Brigade here authority has failed to take any positive action, he added.
‘We have lost all our belongings, we are homeless,’ stated another victim while appealing the concern authority to confer immediate relief.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained but locals claimed that a mentally disturbed person is behind the incident. However Police is yet to comment on the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile, local MLA Chow Tewa Mein along with Deputy Commissioner Namsai also visited the incident site and met the victims. Mein also took the ground reports and later assured to extend all possible help to the fire victims. He also directed the DC to make proper assessment of the losses and to make relief materials available to victims.
