Making the country more energy efficient has been a major focus of the NDA government and the launch of several schemes in this regard is showing positive results nationwide. Along with the Ujala scheme under which LED bulbs are being distributed at subsidized rates, the Centre is also distributing energy efficient fans and pumps used in the country's agriculture sector by rural farmers.

According to data available with the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, pan-India distribution of energy-efficient LED bulbs has crossed over 24 crore, fans 10 lakh and tube lights 27, 45,175 as on till July 6, 2017.

The government has set to achieve the target of replacing all the 77 crore inefficient bulbs in India with LEDs. This will result in reduction of 20,000 MW load, energy savings of 100 billion kWh and Green House Gas (GHG) reduction of 80 million tonnes every year.

India is the largest consumer of ceiling fans in the world. But, people are largely unaware of energy-efficient fans or super-efficient fans. The demand of energy efficiency fans in India is still very less due to price variations and lack of awareness. Household electricity consumption is largely for refrigerators, lighting, fans and air conditioners. Experts believe that shifting to LED lights and five-star fans can enable average households to reduce their power bills by 45 percent.

It is quite clear in public memory that the introduction of the pre-paid metering system in the state capital was met with much protest but truth be told this initiative was much needed as energy wastage and revenue pilferage has been ubiquitous. Not just citizens but government departments are equally guilty of not paying electricity bills on time. Metering of electricity has ensured its judicious use and minimum waste.

The world today is driven by energy. As population booms, so is the demand for energy. But production of additional or increased quantity of energy is obviously not an easy task. It involves both huge expenditure as well as a long gestation period.

Reducing energy consumption is the answer, a feat many developed countries have managed to ace— they have been able to do so by applying simple housekeeping measures and using energy efficient technologies.

There is an urgent need to change our attitude towards wastage of energy. It should become a habit with the people whether working in offices or at home to check and conserve energy. Energy saved is energy generated.
