The suspected death of a young student of JNV Tawang following a group clash between students of two schools at Tawang is a huge tragic as a promising life has been lost. The incident also raises serious questions about the prevailing mindset among the youths.

There has been many such incidents when young lives were lost over trivial arguments. It leaves one feeling aghast and worried at the insensitive and intolerant nature of our younger generation.

Youth without doubt is the backbone of a country but lately all is not so well with this valuable category of human resource. The indulgence of youth in violence with an alarming frequency has left sociologists and academics wondering- what has gone wrong.

It is one thing to stand up against atrocities and another to take the law in your hands.

Society is slowly witnessing the transition of the well behaved, obedient, disciplined brigade from earlier days into insolents and rebels- which is necessary to facilitate self-expression and independence but often finds more expression in deviance than anything else.

Many blame the mass media and the parents, who appear to be progressively losing control over their wards. The mass media with its explicit and enticing content can have a profound impact on the impressionable minds. Glorification of violence and vengeance in films, literature and video games has led to declining sensitivity. Also parents have failed at shaping children’s character and on many occasions tend to believe that material or monetary facilities are enough to make up for their lack of time or enough to keep them on track. More worrisome of course is the growing proximity between student leaders and the political class which has also been stoking violence on the campuses.

But despite the blame game over the declining standards snowballing out of control with various agencies facing the brunt of it including hormones; youths must also own up to their follies. Youth of the present times has more going for them than ever before. Right from increase in standard of living to technology and better education, every facility is up on a platter. It is high time to pause and introspect for a moment.
