While society is quick to point fingers and minutely scrutinize everything related to the education scene, it however conveniently overlooks interference from various quarters which disturbs its autonomy and functioning. Caught between things, much needed reforms and tough decisions have taken a backseat.

Arunachal is probably the only state in the country where even a constitutional body— Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission has been made to bend its rules to fit popular sentiments.

Ever since the state government effected teacher rationalization, students have been on tenterhooks as teachers and there has been sporadic protest over the implementation.

The intent behind the policy is noble, however, it could have been better timed. Transferring teachers randomly mid-session without ensuring relievers is in place beats the whole purpose of the exercise. The commotion arising due to unavailability of subject teachers especially for students facing the CBSE board exams will lead to further dip in educational performance come result time.

To be fair to the education department, teething problems and upheaval is normal during any change. The attempt to right the wrong, an outcome of decades of mismanagement at administrative and government level is commendable to say the least.

Leaving aside obvious lacunae such as poor infrastructure, shortage of trained manpower, the current plight of education is also largely due to political manoeuvrings and indiscriminate use of this field to score brownie points.

The AAPSU’s decision not to entertain requests regarding exam related matters recently is noteworthy. Being the apex students’ body if it follows through, it will set a good precedent for others and will help the education process.

Emile Durkeim said, as time unfolds, educational systems come to contain the imprint of the past stages in the development of society, as each epoch leaves an imprint on the system.

So what will be our imprint?
