Eastern Sentinel Arunachal News

The recent Mega International Food Fair in Germany was an important platform to showcase food processing potential of the participating countries. Fairs of these kind are awaited eagerly since they act as great windows to the exciting world of business and for garnering investments. Like all other participants, India had tried to display its capacities and it was particularly nice to observe that Arunachal Pradesh had been a part of the contingent and there were conscious efforts to promote the state’s food processing capabilities to the global business community.
Arunachal has presented itself as an unexplored food industries destination and there had also been special mention that the mode of farming in the state is by and large organic.   This aroused an extra interest and it’s ought to be so as ‘organic farming’ are the buzzwords in agri-business sector and primarily due to health benefits, there is an ever increasing demand for all food items that carry the ‘organic’ tag. With organic food items becoming part of daily diet for a considerable part of the global populace, it needs no retelling that there are good business prospects in this sector. In India, food processing industry has come a long way and with the infusion of foreign investments from global behemoths, it’s already a prominent player in the overall economy of the country. Despite various challenges, there has been   a steady climb during last decade and now with the popular mandate that organic is here to stay and rule, a whole new lot of opportunities   have been thrown open for those handful of states where organic methods of farming is practiced on a regular basis and with care. It is here Arunachal has a much better chance of leveraging its position in the food processing arena. It’s fruits and vegetables have already excited the taste buds of consumers and the nutritive values also duly acknowledged by food technologists and medical fraternity alike. Besides these two, there are wide varieties of spices, meat and poultry, inputs for alcoholic beverages and various other agro-related items which the state is ready to offer and the industry is ready to absorb as input ingredients. But the truth which is unavoidable is that there is a serious lack of concrete investments, without which the state’s food processing industry can never gain the desired momentum.
In spite of possessing clear potential, Arunachal has so far and mostly been a fence-sitter. Concerted efforts for wooing investors with simultaneous heed to all infrastructural needs specific to this industry are urgent needs of the hour. Blessed with organic strength, food processing for Arunachal is something win-win which must be ‘cashed in’ appropriately.
