The West Kameng district administration on Wednesday took up the matter of unbecoming attitude of few employees of the State Bank of India after complaints from the public and officials. This is probably the first time that such a reaction has come from a high office. But most of the general public are quite aware of being subjected to such ‘haughtiness’ at the hands of the SBI staffers. The main SBI branch at Bank Tinali in the state capital has to be the worst and the most customer-unfriendly bank of them all.

Right from poor information dissemination to ‘annoyed’ employees behind desks, banking with this particular SBI is a ‘horror’. The callous manner in which an average customer is treated points to poor management and orientation.

We understand the workload is immense but why take it out on customers. A Chinese proverb very aptly says—A person who cannot smile must not open shop. Had the SBI not been a government enterprise with the most reach, it would definitely have had to close shop.

Slack attitude has been the ‘Achilles Heel’ for most of the government undertakings. On the other hand private players seem to understand this basic ‘courtesy’ albeit fuelled by competition and are able to outshine their government counterparts.

Arunachal has taken a historic step to go cashless with the inauguration of the Digi Dhan Mela in January earlier this year and this requires greater assistance and support for people through banks.

The journey poses more challenges for us than the rest of India because of the lack of banking coverage and also the non-existent net connectivity plus not to forget a majority e-illiterate populace.

Even within the capital complex, the most advanced urban pocket, business establishments etc still operate on cash. Shops with POS facilities are countable and poor internet makes using them another cause for headaches.

With all the teething problems, the biggest banking sector cannot afford to go rogue.
