The 4-lane highway has taken its first step to realisation with the capital administration carrying out eviction from the Chandranagar area a day earlier. This long pending project heralds a new beginning for the capital complex which is no doubt an urban pocket however lacks the bearings of a modern city. The chocked streets, haphazard construction and unorganised vendors give the capital a shabby appearance.

In keeping its dream of gaining the Smart City tag for Itanagar, all out effort is being made to tick the checklist in terms of infrastructure and beautification. In the recent past we have seen the Itanagar Municipal Council pull up its socks and give a cleaner look to the twin capital cities.

Concerted effort has been made to move the unsightly slaughterhouses from the national highways and also an attempt has been made to streamline vendors and hawkers.

However, instead of solely focusing on such activities along the national highway, the district officials must also streamline vendors along arterial roads. If one looks at the TT Marg, VIP road which leads to important state landmark—Banquet Hall and the erstwhile CM Bungalow, both sides of this road has been narrowed down by businesses. While these don’t pose much of a problem, shops selling poultry are springing up just about anywhere without proper means. They are creating nuisance as the remains are not properly disposed and often end up on the roadside, creating an unhygienic atmosphere. Similar is the scene across the capital.

Streamlining all such activities is an important facet of town beautification which has been long overlooked. Garbage and unorganized vendors, hawking goes hand in hand. Therefore, regulating them in public areas will go a long way in the beautification of the capital complex, and also enable the vendors and hawkers to earn their livelihood in a respectable manner.
